FAQ
How do I become a volunteer Tax Preparer at Chimo?
The CRA website, Become a CVITP volunteer – Canada.ca, includes step-by-step instructions to become a volunteer, including registration and eligibility requirements. During the registration process, you’ll have an opportunity to select Chimo Community Services as a CVITP-affiliated organization.
After completing their review, the CRA will send an email to successful applicants. They’ll let you know that you meet the suitability screening requirements, and you’ll receive an EFILE number and password.
Do I need a background in accounting or finance to be a volunteer?
No, the CVITP is designed for simple tax situations so you don’t have to be an accountant or financial expert. You should be comfortable using a computer, and you’ll need good English and math skills. Fluency in other languages is an asset.
What is the deadline for registering as a volunteer?
Volunteers must be registered with the CRA and have a valid EFILE number and password before assisting at a tax clinic. Because the CRA review process can take several weeks to complete, we ask that all interested volunteers register no later than February 1, 2026.
